Don’t Let Infertility Get You Down

Infertility can be filled with uncertainty, grief, and frustration. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed—especially when it seems like everyone around you is growing their families while you’re struggling to take those next steps. But you are not alone. In this article, we’ll explore the statistics, mental health impacts, and ways to find support on your journey to parenthood.

Infertility Statistics

According to Harvard Medical School estimates, approximately 5% of heterosexual couples in the United States, Europe, and Australia experience infertility, meaning they have difficulty conceiving or carrying a child to term. Infertility can stem from various causes: about one-third of cases are due to issues in the male reproductive system, another third are attributed to female reproductive factors, and around 10% involve both partners. In 10–20% of cases, the cause remains unknown, a condition known as “unexplained infertility.” At PHA, we understand the significant emotional and physical impact that individuals and couples experience and offer several paths to find infertility support that’s right for your situation.

The Emotional Toll of Infertility

The emotional impact of infertility is profound. A study reported by Harvard Health Publishing found that 100 out of 200 female infertility patients described the experience as the most upsetting of their lives, while 15% of men in the study reported feeling the same way. Another study, which examined nearly 500 American women facing infertility, found that their symptoms of depression and anxiety were as severe as those experienced by women diagnosed with cancer.

The Importance of Mental Health Support

Coping with infertility can take a significant toll on mental health, making it essential to seek emotional and psychological support. Research has shown that individuals who experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy are more likely to develop more severe postpartum mental health conditions. Addressing mental health early can provide crucial support during the fertility journey and beyond.

For those navigating infertility, several organizations and professionals offer guidance and support.
